There is a lot of nutrition that can come from beets! Beets have a wealth of nutrients and remarkable health benefits available to us and they are full of things like:
- Antioxidants
- Natural nitrates
- Betaine
- Vitamins
- Minerals
In this article
- I have studied and chosen to talk about what benefits from beets I believe are the most beneficial for your health!
- I provide a practical and convenient way for the whole family to consume beets!
- And a tasty smoothie recipe that your family will love!
Top 4 remarkable benefits of beets
The pigment betacyanin in this root vegetable is what gives it its dark red / purple colour. From that, comes the antioxidant betalain that has been shown to be specifically helpful for fighting against inflammation to colon cancer which I will talk about further on.
- Beets have been traditionally used for dyes.
- They are a good source of natural sugars.
- One cool fact is that throughout history, beets have been used as a source for extracting sugar.

The American heart association says that 1 cup of beet juice daily can lower high blood pressure by 10 points! It has only 59 calories and 3.8g of fiber which is 15% of your daily needed fiber (if eaten raw)!
Obviously it is great to eat them but when beets (or any vegetables) are also juiced, the fiber is removed allowing them to be highly concentrated and readily available!
Studies have shown that juiced beets provide more nutrition than raw beets! Don’t have a juicer? Don’t want to take the time and do the work? Visit re-think-health products for a high quality beetroot powder from beets that have been already juiced for your convenience!
Even though juiced beets retain the maximum available nutrients to be absorbed into your cells, choose to have a diet mixed with raw beets for the fiber and juiced beets for the powerful boost of nutrients!
When cooked or eaten raw, (which is great and good for your bowels because of the fiber!) some of the nutrients will be lost with the heat and in the stomach from being used as fuel for digestion and absorption.
1. Beets have many vitamins and minerals
Your cells need to be fed vitamins and minerals daily. Some of these the body produces naturally but the majority you need from food rich in vitamins and minerals.
Today with the Standard American Diet (SAD), the majority of us do not eat enough nutritious food and are deficient in what our cells need to do their job. Many symptoms can appear like:
- Lack of energy
- Chronic pain
- Bowel issues
- Autoimmune diseases
- Skin conditions
- Chronic problems like high blood pressure, diabetes and others…
Your body may be able to sustain itself for a little while, but after some time the storehouses will be depleted and symptoms you have may start to become more severe.
Do you struggle with any of these?
But the good news is that beets are full of vitamins and minerals that will benefit and nourish your body!
The following list shows how much % of daily required amount is in 1 Cup of beets.
- 37% Folate
- 22% Magannese
- 13% Potassium
- 11% Vitamin C
- 8% Magnesium
- 6% Iron
- 5% Vitamin B6 (along with smaller amounts of other B vitamins)
- 5% Phosphorus
To make things even easier, you can get the benefits of beets that have already been juiced and dried into a powder form and just add water – here!
As you can see, it doesn’t have to be hard to get great nutrition and maintain good health!

2. Beets decrease Inflammation
Beets can be a great way to limit inflammation! The betalains in beets are said to lower blood pressure and inflammation throughout the body.
Inflammation is the body’s normal response to fighting against infections and anything in the body that shouldn’t be there. Sometimes however, the body may reject food and inflammation that may come from an environmental trigger, as in certain allergic reactions.
Inflammation is at the root of most diseases. In this study they found that certain foods and exercise consistently improve cancer and other conditions resulting from chronic inflammation.
I believe it is well known and this study also supports me, that inflammation increases the risk for…
- Cardiovascular disease / heart disease,
- Obesity
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Cholesterol
- and cancer.
The list above is filled with conditions that are of the top killers today. Yet it is sad because these conditions among many others are preventable. Inflammation is at the core and it is primarily caused by what you eat and how you treat your body.
It states that “dietary patterns are considered of central importance”.
Eat a diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, limit sugar, refined, modified and processed foods.
And beets are a remarkable vegetable to start with!

3. Raw Beets are high in fiber
Fiber is so important today and I think we underestimate its benefits. You absolutely need fiber for nutrients to be properly digested, absorbed, assimilated, utilized and then eliminated.
- It regulates digestion
- Feeds gut bacteria
- Allows nutrients to be absorbed
- Cleans the intestinal walls
- Helps move things along
Fiber is like the oil for your gut and digestion. Without it your gut cannot function properly.
Beets are a great source of fiber when eaten raw! They have 3.8grams per cup. That is 15% of your daily needed amount!
Today the average intake is around 10grams. You need 25-35grams per day! This is why the majority of people struggle with digestive and gut problems.
Your bowel is where the majority of your immune system lies. It is the main organ that cleans your body. If the bowels are not in shape then other organs can become damaged.
In this study, fiber has been shown as a way better option to resolve constipation than any medication, laxative or placebo (which affects more than 20% of the world and rising).
So make sure to have a diet full of fibrous foods including raw beets!

4. Lastly, beets have remarkable benefits for your heart and vasculature system.
I think the shape and colour of beets gives this one away. Beets benefit your heart in so many ways! This is where beets shine most when juiced because its nutrients are readily available and quickly absorbed into the bloodstream for a boost of nutrition!
First, as we mentioned before, that beets have the phytonutrient/antioxidant (nutrients from plants that protect the plants from environmental damage) betalain.
Betalain eliminates toxins and especially reduces ones like homocysteine that are linked to damaging blood vessels, causing clots and atherosclerosis leading to heart disease.
Second, it lowers blood pressure. High blood pressure is obviously known to increase the chances of stroke, heart disease, heart attacks, diabetes and more… “A diet full of fruits and vegetables decrease the chances”.
A study was done comparing raw and juiced beets. It was shown that both help but the juiced beets were more effective and reduced blood pressure when taken daily.
Third, and most remarkable, beets are loaded with dietary nitrates! Now these are not the dangerous synthetic nitrates found in processed food. These are natural nitrates from the beets.
Long story short, nitrates are converted in the body to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator. That means that it does a very good job at opening up your blood vessels. This will…
- Lower blood pressure
- Increase circulation to your heart, lungs, brain, extremities…
- Clean out your vessels improving cholesterol levels
- All cells, tissues, organs and organ systems benefit from nitrates!
Add raw beets and juiced beets to your daily diet to improve the health of your heart, blood and vasculature system!
